Project Update (March 2007)
The project examines whether water efficiency can be more successfully incorporated, and expanded, through an ongoing discussion between practitioners, municipal decision-makers and community. Our interim results focused on the project's response rates and an assessment of the community dynamics, the available social capital and network structure and function.
The project is now in the third phase (Community Outreach, February - April 2007). On March 22nd (World Water Day) we hosted a workshop with the "centres of influence", i.e., the individuals who were identified through the community mapping exercise. The response was encouraging - nine of ten people accepted the invitation - and the conversation was dynamic. A dominant theme was the initial success of existing water efficiency measures (e.g., meters) and the Township's success in meeting government regulations. Topics to be considered further included how demographic and environmental changes might influence the township's planning and how the community might use water efficiency as a starting point to articulate a comprehensive "Blue Legacy". These two issues would be useful for informing the municipality's future planning and decisions. In April, we will extend our outreach campaign to include water efficiency presentations with interested community groups.
The next project phase is will be focused on data analysis and writing. We will consolidate the results in a document be reviewed by both the workshop participants and an external group of water efficiency expert.
