"Integrating gender equality into Canada's international
cooperation"

The overall objective of Rita Soares Pinto’s fellowship work has been to contribute to renewing the commitment of Canada’s international development efforts to advance women’s rights and gender equality. To this end, she (1) conducted research in Canada and in Mali, (2) initiated and co-organized the international conference Women’s rights and gender equality in Canadian cooperation: Challenges and perspectives, (3) edited the conference proceedings of the same name and (4) is the founder of “Genre en pratique”, a community of practice bringing together over ten international development organizations, based at the Association québécoise des organismes de cooperation internationale (AQOCI), and funded by the International Development Research Centre (IDRC).

Biography

Rita Soares Pinto is Gender Equality Program Officer at Oxfam-Québec. Previously, she worked as Program Officer for SUCO (2002-2007), worked as an advisor and trainer on gender issues for various organizations (among them AQOCI) and as a researcher. She has been involved in a number of different public education and advocacy campaigns in Canada such as "Rebuilding Afghanistan with women" and other campaigns on corporate social responsibility (CSR) of Canadian mining companies operating internationally. A member of AQOCI’s Comité Québécois Femmes et Développement (CQFD) since 2002, she has served on the coordinating committee for several years. She has worked in several countries around the world including Brazil, Peru, Mali, France and Canada.

Rita holds a Master’s in Development from l'Université catholique de Louvain-La-Neuve in Belgium as well as a Master's degree in Rural and Development Studies from Toulouse Le-Mirail. She speaks Portuguese, French, English, Spanish and Italian.
