Bio

Claire is currently working as a consultant in the field of climate change law and policy and is in the final stages of completing her law degree. She began her career at the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research in Germany where she conducted research on Article 2 of the Framework Convention on Climate Change. She was a fellow of the United Nations Institute for Training and Research’s Climate Change Programme for three years where she worked on capacity building initiatives in developing countries.

Claire has been attending the international climate negotiations since 2003 and has worked with many organizations and civil society groups on the subject, including youth. In 2005, she organized the official youth parallel events to the Montreal Climate Change Conference, which brought together over 100 youth from 26 different countries. She is a founding member of the Canadian Youth Climate Coalition and was one of the Coalition’s delegates to the UN Secretary General’s first ever Heads of State meeting on climate change in September 2007. Claire has also served as the youth representative on the Climate Action Network Canada’s Board of Directors.

Originally from Winnipeg, Claire holds an International Masters in Environmental Policy from Roskilde University in Denmark, a B.Sc. from McGill University and an International Baccalaureate Diploma from Li Po Chun United World College in Hong Kong.

Issue of Investigation

As a 2008 recipient of the Gordon Global Fellowship, Claire will examine the role technology will play in securing a post-2012 climate deal as well as how a possible technology mechanism could be structured. In December 2007, countries launched a new round of negotiations to agree upon a ‘post-2012 deal’ (as the first commitment period of the Kyoto Protocol expires in 2012). These negotiations are set to conclude in December 2009 in Copenhagen.
