Strategies for grant making

Fresh Water Resources
The following help to illustrate the Foundation's approach to the Fresh Water Resources Protection Program.

Strategies:

  • Invest in leaders and future leaders in Canadian water policy.
  • Strengthen capacity within Canadian civil society to propose new ideas, shape emerging policy, and network and strategize with others.
  • Support research and reports that create knowledge, explore innovative approaches, and highlight current policy and opportunities for improvement.
  • Encourage and facilitate the sharing of such knowledge to promote informed dialogue and empower engagement by civil society on water issues.
  • Promote and facilitate collaboration and information sharing among grant recipients and others.
  • Support projects that address provincial and federal policy, inform municipal policy in a way that is relevant for other jurisdictions, and inform a national perspective on water issues.
  • Direct some programme funding to work by organizations that may not have a primary focus on water issues, but play an important role in public engagement and policy development.

The following would generally NOT be funded under this program:

  • Support for local stewardship initiatives, including efforts to protect or conserve particular freshwater sources. Other local initiatives will only be considered when they have broader policy relevance or may provide a model for other initiatives.
  • Projects focused primarily on water treatment or testing.
  • Research that does not have clear application or policy-relevance.
  • Work on oceans or fisheries.

The Foundation plays an active role in the development and implementation of this program. Many of our grants in this area are Foundation-initiated.
