GRANT PROGRAMS

Elizabeth L. Gordon Art Program

Elizabeth L. Gordon Art Programme Elizabeth Gordon had a special interest in art. She believed in the vital role of the volunteer and the amateur enthusiast in the life of galleries.

Through the Elizabeth L. Gordon Art Program the Foundation endeavours to:

  • assist public art galleries in Ontario to plan and develop art collections of depth and quality.
  • increase the role of volunteers, enthusiasts, collectors and donors in the creation of unique collections of art.
  • stimulate communities in their support of local art galleries by challenging them to raise matching funds for acquisitions.
  • increase knowledge of collections and collecting.

Challenge Grants

The Foundation assists public galleries in Ontario to build their permanent collections. Through the challenge grant programme, funds raised by participating local gallery communities are matched by the Foundation. Challenge grants are designed to leverage funds for acquisitions that will strengthen collections and often help galleries to qualify for matching funding from the Canada Council. The Foundation does not direct the purchases of works. Discretion on acquisitions is left up to the galleries so that the funds may be used to purchase drawings related to works in their collection, works to complete a series, or works that will bring depth and coherence to their collections. Challenge grants are meant to stimulate volunteer support and donations of money and artwork thereby raising the local profile of the galleries, enabling galleries to strengthen their collections and boosting community commitment to the importance of art and collections.

Meetings on Collections

Meetings on Collections grants support discussions on collections in an effort to stimulate interest in and increase knowledge of collecting generally and the collections of public galleries in Ontario specifically. The goal of this programme is to foster the pride in and commitment to collections that helps to generate donations of works and funds.

Please note: The Elizabeth L. Gordon Art program will be suspended during 2010 and 2011.
